Visual Culture and the Crisis of History: American Documentary Practice in the
Postmodern Erais an interdisciplinary attempt to bridge the distinct fields of Art
History, Film Studies, Postcolonialism, Postmodernism, and Archival theory in the
analysis of documentary films' use of the photographic archive in the era of
digitalization. Taking Ken Burns’s The Civil War(1990), Michael Moore’s Bowling for
Columbine(2002) and Fahrenheit 9/11(2004), and Errol Morris’s The Fog of War
(2003) as paradigmatic examples of American documentary films pitched to a mass
audience, my research examines the contemporary Western “crisis” in historical
narrative.
